TECHNICAL SERVICES DEPARTMENT
This department, generally, does not deal with the reading public directly. Its works are properly described as ‘behind the scene routines.’ The staff employed here are engaged in the processing of books and other information materials by using accepted techniques such as acquiring, accessioning, classifying, cataloging, binding, and mechanical methods of reproduction such as Photostatting, printing, and scanning of documents so that they can be used by the public.
The acquisition unit is responsible for acquiring library materials from different sources which include; purchase, exchange, gift or donation, request, legal deposit etc. In a third world like Nigeria, purchases constitute 98% means of acquiring Library material. It is through this unit that all Library materials are acquired. This is a unit that UMYU Library design and set for the acquisition of its information materials. The unit is also very significant to the library because of the following functions:
- Acquiring of information materials
- Preparing of ordering slip
- Bibliographical checking/verification
- Receipt of materials in the Library
This is one of the most important units of the technical service and the library at large. This unit is responsible for selecting, ordering, purchasing of materials and accepting donations. It is also the responsibility of this unit to stamp materials acquired for security reasons. Books are stamped on the first three pages and last three pages; a specific page of the book is also stamp for security purpose. The stamps include property stamp, accession stamp, in case of donation a stamp is also designed for that. Materials acquired are given accession number each for easy identification and location. Allocation of accession number is guided by the accession register in which all materials are registered. The information on the accession register includes author, title, and year of publication, publisher, source and note/remark. After all these processes, the materials are transferred to cataloging and classification units. The integrated library software (ILS) used by the library known as KOHA also gives room for managing library acquisition process.
